LED Sports Lighting — IIT Ropar
Turning Dark Grounds into Night-Ready Playing Fields
When the sun went down at IIT Ropar, the sports grounds effectively shut. Despite being one of India's premier technology institutes, its grounds could only be used in daylight — evening practice, inter-college matches and events were all off the table once it got dark. The institute needed lighting that could bring its grounds up to a proper playing standard after sunset, and keep running costs low for the long term. Reway took on two grounds together — a cricket ground and a football ground.
Reway took on the project end to end. As a complete lighting partner, we handled the design, the supply of every fixture, the installation, the testing and the final commissioning — delivering two grounds that go from dark fields to fully floodlit, match-ready facilities at the flip of a switch
The Challenge
Lighting a sports ground to a playable standard is a very different problem from simply making an area brighter — and here it had to be done for two different grounds, each with its own layout and lighting needs. Several issues had to be solved together:
• No usable light after dark — With no adequate lighting, both grounds sat idle every evening. For an active campus, that is two valuable facilities going unused for half of each day.
• Below sports standard — Cricket and football each need specific brightness (lux) levels and even light across the whole field — and the two sports have different requirements. The existing setup fell well short on both grounds, making proper evening play impossible.
• Dark spots and glare — Uneven lighting creates dark patches and glare. For players tracking a fast-moving ball — a cricket ball can travel at over 150 km/h — that is both a performance and a safety problem.
• High running cost of conventional lighting — Traditional metal-halide floodlights draw heavy power, lose brightness as they age, and need frequent, costly replacement. Over a ground's life, that adds up quickly.
Our Solution
Reway delivered the project as a single, coordinated package — so the people who designed the lighting were the same ones who installed and commissioned it. That keeps the final result true to the design and avoids the gaps that appear when work is split across vendors.
• Design — We prepared a separate photometric lighting design for each ground — calculating the correct lux levels for cricket and for football, and planning fixture placement and aiming so light falls evenly across each field with no dark patches. This is the stage that decides whether a ground is genuinely match-ready.
• Supply — We supplied high-efficiency LED floodlights and mounting hardware for both grounds, selected to suit each ground's dimensions and sport. Fixture quality directly affects brightness, uniformity and how long the system lasts.
• Installation — Our team installed the poles and fixtures on both grounds and aimed each one carefully for full- field coverage with minimal glare and light spill beyond the playing area.
• Testing — Before handover, we tested the installed systems on both grounds — checking light levels,
uniformity across each field, and safe electrical operation.
• Commissioning — Both systems were then commissioned and handed over fully live and match-ready, so the
grounds could be used for evening play immediately.
Results & Impact
After installation, both grounds were transformed from unusable evening fields into fully floodlit, match-ready facilities. The cricket and football grounds can now be used well into the night for practice, matches and events.
| Metric | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Energy use vs metal-halide | Up to 70% lower |
| Rated fixture life | 50,000+ hours |
| Light quality | Flicker-free, uniform, low glare |
The impact goes beyond simply switching the lights on. Both grounds now meet sports-standard brightness and uniformity — the cricket ground and the football ground each to its own requirement — so they can host proper evening play. Because the lighting is flicker-free, it is also suitable for clean video recording of matches and events, increasingly important for college sport. And since LED floodlights use up to 70% less power than the metal-halide fixtures they replace, and are rated for 50,000+ hours, the institute gains all of this while keeping energy and maintenance costs low for years to come.
Why LED for Sports Grounds
For any stadium or sports facility, lighting is one of the biggest ongoing expenses. Moving to LED changes that equation sharply:
• Lower electricity bills — LED floodlights use up to 70% less power than conventional metal-halide lighting for the same brightness — the single biggest saving for any venue.
• Longer life, less maintenance — Rated for 50,000+ hours, LEDs far outlast metal-halide lamps, which fade within months and fail within a few years. That means far fewer replacements and far less maintenance on tall poles.
• Better light quality — Uniform spread, low glare and no flicker make the ground easier on players' eyes and clean for cameras.
• Instant control — LEDs reach full brightness the instant they are switched on, with no warm-up, and can be dimmed easily when full power is not needed
Why Reway
A sports-lighting project succeeds or fails at the design stage — getting the lux levels, uniformity and aiming right takes real engineering, not just bright fixtures. Reway brings that expertise together with the ability to deliver the whole project under one roof: design, supply, installation, testing and commissioning. For the client, that means one accountable partner, a result that matches the design, and two grounds built to perform night after night.
